Natalie Pryce, 2014
Supporting Dark Horses at King Tut’s, Glasgow. September 2014.
This was the first time I’ve ever been forced to use manual focus at a concert. Four men in dark suits against a dull red backlight, and the only front light was a couple of weak strobes, meant there no contrast for my autofocus to lock onto. Instead I had to use the Manual Focus Assist mode on my Nex-6’s rear screen to quickly try and get the mic as sharp as possible before taking the shot. It seems to have been quite successful though.
Beyond the lighting issues the band were superb though, with a real tortured, charismatic performance from singer Mark Swan.
